The Northeastern Ecosystem Research Cooperative (NERC) is a scientific organization of ecosystem researchers in the northeastern U.S. and eastern Canada, which focuses on studying the health of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in the region. Its mission is to promote regional research, monitoring and management through:
- Collaborative regional-scale research projects
- Shared data and results
- Support for long-term monitoring
- Analysis of regional environmental issues
- Enhanced communication among researchers, managers and policy-makers
The region of emphasis for the NERC is the glaciated terrain of New York, the New England states, and Eastern Canada. This includes upland forests as well as the lowland and coastal regions that are linked to the uplands by the major river systems. This area has an underlying similarity of vegetation, soils and climate that is useful in comparative analysis.
